Paris France Night life

Night life

Parisian night is a miracle of spectacular illumination and swirling club life. It can boast a flourishing music scene, comprising all genres and periods. The nightlife options vary from Opera evening performances to stylish bars and cabarets. The Champs-Elysées and Trocadéro are the quintessence of nightlife, but in the recent times they’re overcrowded by tourists and extremely overpriced. Bustling Bastille becomes the newly popular entertainment centre along with Menilmontant and the Marais, renowned for its spicy cabarets, and, of course, the legendary Moulin Rouge. There exists a variety of small pubs and clubs with very special ambience. The rush of Irish and British bars popularity declines, and the cosmopolitan cushy spots resemble those of Eastern Berlin or East End of London, with that exclusive Paris flavour of chic and frivolity. Among the trendiest Buddha Bar, Café Charbon and Le Mecano Bar on rue Oberkampf, Lou Pascalou, and the venue for most extravagant outfits.

The clubs are generally smaller than in many other European capitals, but have cozier ambience. Techno, house, garage and Latino are the popular sounds of Paris and, to a lesser extent, hip hop and drum‘n’bass. Le Divan du Monde, located in the Pigalle district, once hosted Toulouse-Lautrec but now draws zealous clubbers according to the programme - Brazilian, tango, indie, rock, house and hip hop. Le Saint, which plays disco, house and salsa, is inexpensive and relaxed. Les Bains Douches is a former Turkish bathhouse transformed into the most pretentious of clubs. Batofar is a fun little club housed in a boat on the Seine that boasts a wide range of musical styles.

Live music venues, common in Paris, include Le Divan du Monde, Le Bilboquet, with classy jazz, La Flèche d’Or, a converted station turned live-music venue, hosts rock, blues, reggae and satirical French chansons. Chesterfield Café, is popular with ex-pats and hosts US rock and blues bands. Major rock concerts take place at the Palais des Congrès. The Opus Jazz and Blues Restaurant offers good food and an eclectic selection of music, from aspiring Parisian youths through to more established acts.
