For several centuries Paris was and remains the world’s capital of fashion and constant source of inspiration for designers, determining the situation in world’s haute couture. Parisian ideal is elegance rather than eccentricity. It is the home for numerous top-quality designers. The exclusive designer shops are in the 8^th arrondissement, enclosed in the golden triangle formed by avenue des Champs-Elysées, avenue Montaigne and rue François 1er and along rue du Faubourg St-Honoré.

Paris is considered to be the most expensive city in the world. But there is in fact a great deal of bargain chic – if one knows where to seek. Typically Parisian shopping experience is to be had at the main department stores situated on boulevard Haussmann, 8^th - Les Galeries, with its huge coloured dome, and Au Printemps. Cheap and chip outfit can be picked up at Tati, one of the biggest department stores, cut-price designer gear at Mouton à Cinq Pattes. January and July are the traditional sales time.

Marais district is full of small, friendly boutiques, some of them featuring the works of young designers, displayed at  L’Eclaireur. Among recommended brands Colette, Hervé Chapelier, Marie Mercie (exclusive hat designer studio), agnès b chain stores. Maître Parfumeur et Gantier is best for perfumes.

The Carrousel du Louvre, under the glass pyramid in the Louvre courtyard, has great selection of exquisite gifts. Expensive antiques are to be found at Le Louvre des Antiquaires, beside the Louvre on place du Palais Royal. Viaduc des Arts, Avenue Daumesnil,  is a unique and atmospheric shopping venue for genuinely originar designer creations.

French books are represented in overwhelming variety at FNAC stores, English - Shakespeare & Co, Bouquinistes sell antiquities and rarities. There also exists a variety of specifically Parisian spots, really worth to see. Barthélemy is an original cheese boutique, featuring scrumptious French cheeses. Marche Bastille is an extensive market, selling finest fruits, vegetables and delicacies.
