巴黎 法国 Banks and money

Banks and money

The Euro, the single European currency, became the official currency of France and on January 1, 1999. It came into general circulation on January 1, 2002. Though credit cards and travelers’ cheques are convenient solutions to the money issue, it would be wise to exchange the sum to cover airport incidentals and accommodation transfer, for the usual abundance of foreigners causes queues at the ATMs in airport. ATM is the easiest and safest way to get money from home. The users may need 4-digit code or PIN, if they have only the usual 6-digit code they should consider getting a new one. Some banks charge every time of money withdrawal. Travelers’ cheques become less popular with the widespread of ATM, but still can be easily exchanged at any bank, American Express or Thomas Cook offices. However, exchanging in the foreign bank may carry commission in the amount of ATM withdrawal fee. All major credit cards are widely accepted and have good exchange rates in banks.

The rates of euro to dollar are single for all the EU countries, but constantly fluctuating. It some considerable transactions are intended, it would be wise to check the rates right before arrival, for the difference may result in several per cent losses. The banks also exchange other foreign currencies. Banks and exchange booths have better rates than airports, hotels, department stores or train stations. Commission fees should be examined carefully. Post offices also handle basic banking transactions and Western Union transfers. Banks are generally open weekdays 9am-noon and 2pm-5:30pm. Larger banks don't close for lunch. Some are open on Saturday mornings. Major Banks are CIC, HSBC, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Credit Mutuel, Credit Agricole, and LCL.
