Theatre and movies

The opulent Baroque Opera Garnier, also known as Paris Opera, was designed for Napoleon III. The fame of this magnificent and mysterious theatre was recently boosted by the Joel Schumacher’s box-office hit “The Phantom of the Opera”. It is the home for National Music academy. But now it is used mainly for ballet performances. The Opera Bastille, opened in 1989 on the 200th anniversary of storming of Bastille, is a modern opera with distinctively futuristic design. It stages certain percentage of classical performances, but also hosts modern opera groups and musicals.

Paris is renowned for its flourishing independent cinema productions, small-scale film companies and arthouse cinema. Every week about 300 films are shown in the city. There are no English-language cinemas, foreign films are either showed in their original language with subtitles (VO), or dubbed over in French without subtitles (VF).   The most popular cinemas include Cinémathèque Francaise – French Cinema Museum and Cineplex, with cinema library and research center, a cushy spot for a cinema addict. UGC Ciné Cité has 16 screens, some of them showing films in their original language.

Among alternative and arthouse cinemas Forum des Images, cinema complex, library and research centre, The Entrepôt, an arthouse cinema opened in a converted warehouse in 1977 by cinema fanatic and future French president François Mitterand. Besides the films, it hosts regular live jazz performances. There exist historic movie theatres, such as Max Linder Panorama, showing retro movies, and La Pagoda with its distinctive Japanese décor.

Paris has two annual open-air cinema festivals each summer. The best known one is at the Parc de la Villette, from mid-July through August, featuring classics and recent hits from around the world in their original language.
